2008 in Science: Part I — Experiments will start at the LHC in May

The Large Hadron Collider will start experiments in May 2008. It is expected to yield answers to the following questions among others:

  1. Is the Higgs mechanism correct?
  2. Why are there apparent violations of symmetry between matter and anti-matter?
  3. Do extra dimensions postulated by string theory correct? If yes, can we see them?
  4. What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy?
  5. Why is gravity so many orders of magnitude weaker than the other fundamental forces?

As a science-fiction aficionado, I'm most interested in the answers to questions 3 and 4.
